Getting students to begin writing an essay draft can be the most difficult part of the process. I beg them, “Just put something down!”. Author Anne Lamott gives a great description of the writer’s block in her short essay Shitty First Drafts. I may not use that exact language with the students, but I do read them quite a bit of the article – hoping they see that what they start out with is most likely not what they’ll end up with. But they won’t know that unless they start somewhere.
This activity uses current essay prompts from a variety of colleges around the US, as students share ideas as a group.
